The Building and Safety Services Division safeguards the citizens of the City of Pleasanton against faulty or inadequate building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical installations and construction practices. The Division provides guidance in compliance with state and local construction laws as they relate to seismic, wind, fire life safety and accessibility in both plan review and field inspection.

Our Permit Center is located in the Pleasanton Civic Center complex at 200 Old Bernal Avenue, adjacent to the Library and Police Station.  Check in at the main foyer of the Civic Center, and you will be seated at our spacious service counter.  The Community Development staff will come to meet with you, rather than you having to go to them. Our hours of service are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

The Building and Safety Division can be reached by telephone at (925) 931-5300 or by fax at (925) 931-5478.  E-mail messages to the Building and Safety Division may be sent to buildingdivision@cityofpleasantonca.gov.

Permits may be applied for in person during regular business hours. See submittal requirements for details. Inspection requests may be made online, by phone or taken in person at the Building and Safety Division counter for the following work day. Inspection request times are for morning or afternoon. Individuals may call the morning of their inspection to speak with their inspector between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Over-the-Counter Plan Review - The Building & Safety Division offers expanded over-the-counter appointments on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Many commercial projects with minimal or no structural work, as well as residential projects and small additions may be eligible to take advantage of this service. For more information, as well as an expanded list of typical projects click here.  Please note that projects requiring Design Review must be approved by the Planning Division before you can request a plan review by the Building & Safety Division. The Planning Division can provide more information about projects that require prior approval. In addition, some projects in an established business park may require prior review by the business park management before submittal to the City.  Eligible over-the-counter projects are always subject to the plan reviewer’s availability and discretion. To make an over-the-counter appointment, please call the Building & Safety Division directly at (925) 931-5300, during normal business hours.

Objective - The Division's objective is to maintain the highest level of public safety and customer service in the administration of building construction code enforcement.

Your comments and suggestions are very important to us to improve our service. Please fill out a customer service survey on How are we doing? link.

Responsibilities - The Division reviews and inspects all private development structures and site work within the property boundary. Work proposed within a public right of way or public easement requires an encroachment permit from the Engineering Division. In many cases zoning regulations govern building setbacks and other items. For questions on building setbacks, maximum height or finish materials contact the Planning Division.
